Could anyone please advise on the choice of the hotels in Central, Wan Chai or Tsim Sha Tsui in the range of up to US$250. We (couple) will visit HK in the middle of September for 10 days, and would like to have accommodation close to the main shopping and entertaining attractions.

Thank you and I appreciate all and any advice.

I have checked their website, and the Eaton Hotel still has Executive Club (with breakfast) rooms in September. If you choose the "7 days or more" option you get free shuttle to & from the airport. Rooms are running about $225 US for that time. Booking on their website gives the best prices & more room options.

The Eaton may be a bit further North than you wanted, but is close to the Jade Market & the Temple Street Night Market. Also, the Jordan MTR station is about 1 block South & buses that run up & down Nathan Road will take you anywhere you need to go.

Below is a post that I have give to several people so far who have inquired mostly about budget accommodation. This list includes both places in Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. The first part of the list is for hostels/guesthouses. The second part of the list is for budget hotels.

Also, take a look at http://www.rstnL.com for similar information.

Note again that the hotels in the list below were designed with more of a budget experience in mind. That is, the hotels below all have rooms that fall into the say, below US$125 a night category. Of course, they also have better rooms that can go for much higher prices.

You have more latitude of choice if you are willing to spend US$250 a night. Thus, I would check out (if you haven't already) the Hong Kong hotels section in tripadvisor.com (the link is on the left side of your screen). Just off the top of my head, US$250 a night will get you a room in the Langham Place Hotel (excellent) and Lanson Place (very very nice). For a bit less you can get a room at the Metropark Causeway Bay (overall very good). Also you can consider the Luxe Manor (ornate rooms, good price) as well as the Excelsior Hotel (location very good).

----------------------------------

Here are some hostel/guesthouse ideas, most of which I have heard good reviews about and/or stayed at before. You will also want to look in the Hong Kong Hotels and Accomodations section of TripAdvisor (look on your upper left hand side for the link). When at that page, click on the tabs (at the top of the page) for B&B's/Inns and Specialty Lodging for reviews of hostels/guesthouses.

There are also some hotels that are not as expensive as you may think and can be of decent quality. You can take a look at the following. Prices can vary greatly though, depending on when you are staying. For prices, take a look at the hotels' website for prices as well as discount hotel websites such as www.hotelclub.com, www.asiatravel.com, www.asiarooms.com, www.agoda.com, www.booking.com, www.wotif.com, etc.

Note that if you look at prices on a discount hotel website, make sure you find out if the price listed is inclusive of all taxes and fees or not. There is a total of 13% taxes and fees (10% service charge and 3% government tax) for most hotel rooms in Hong Kong. Note, though, that as of July 1, 2008, this Hong Kong government will end the 3% government tax on hotel rooms. Some of the discount hotel websites will tell you in the beginning that their prices are inclusive of these taxes and fees - but many will not present these additional taxes and fees to you until you are in the booking process (or have completed booking). So keep that in mind:

US$250 is a pretty good budget. Depending on the season and availability, you might be able to get in:

Tsim Sha Tsui:

Langham Hotel

Marco Polo Prince

Royal Garden

Intercontinental Grand Stanford

Kowloon Shangri La

Eaton (not in TST but more towards the Yau Ma Tei area)

Wan Chai:

Metropark (Wan Chai or Causeway Bay location)

Park Lane (Causeway Bay)

Need some clarification, please. How long did it normally take to travel between Eaton Hotel and Central/Admiralty? Thank you.

Not very far. From Eaton, you'll board at Jordan MTR Station on the south bound red Tuen Wan line. The 2nd stop is Admiralty, about 6~8 minutes. Fare is HK$8.50 single or $7.7 if using Octopus. The 3rd stop is Central, about 8~10 minutes (from Jordan), same fare.

P.S. Allow 7~10 minutes to walk from Eaton to Jordan MTR Station.

The decision has been made... :-) We'll stay in Eaton Hotel. The Executive Club package is very attractive...

Thank you for your help
