In spite of what you may read in the "BOOK" not every place is safe every day, this isn't Disney and it's all too real for some unlucky ones that ingore basic safety rules......Please be careful!!

Maui News reports

"...after receiving a report at 6:32 p.m. Saturday about a man being swept into the sea at an area known as the Blowhole by Nakalele Point.

The man’s girlfriend called authorities to say the victim was standing on rocks at Nakalele Point when he was swept into the ocean.....Air One spotted the man’s lifeless body just before nightfall at 7:02 p.m. about 300 yards offshore and brought him to land..."

That's horrible. But people just don't get it. Use some common sense. This has happened at Keanae in the last few years as well. Do you recall when that was, scubatimm (or anyone)? I think it was more than one person that was swept in by a rogue wave, if I recall correctly.

What a tragedy!

I assume this link is a follow-up to the story ... It seems the man was a local resident.

I don't think the "BOOK" had anything to do with this.

scubatimm,

I am too chicken skin to do these things anyway. There was a warning on Hawaiian air last time about drownings on Maui.

I am a pretty strong swimmer and even surf but I don't mess with Hawaii when there is no life guard.

I don't get some tourists who do this. I hope other tourists head your warning.

you dont have to go to maui to do dumb things regardng water

we lose about 6 people a summer locally that try to swim across a small river that is colder and more deadly then it looks -- kids jump into the river at an area called high rocks and we lose a few of them there too

regardless where you are you should be cautious in the things you do

M-MaiTai

It was a rouge wave that hit the Keanae Peninsula as a small group of tourist had their backs to the ocean for a group picture. A few local guys were near and came to help. Another rouge wave hit and swept two of the tourist away. The local guys were able to save the others that were in the water. . One that died was a vol resuce worker with his local fire dept back on the mainland.

It has been many years ago maybe 8 or 10 . It was a few years after we started visiting Maui, It sure got my attention. I NEVER turn my back on the ocean..not after readind that article.

Thanks for the post. This is one of the places we are going to visit next week. We will be very carefull. Just because people are on vacation, they need to know that the ocean is still unpredictable. This was certainly a horrible way to learn that.

Lougee you are spot on. More people in Oregon die from drowing in rivers and lakes than on Maui's coastline for certain. We do have a much higher population but no lack of people doing stupid things. The death above was of a local, maybe one that was new to the area. Very sad when this happens but it does become a lesson for others.

You're so right to remind people continually that the real world is not a safe kiddy place to be, but there are people roaming around out there that could kill themselves with a mars bar if you didn't keep an eye on them. It's sad & unfortunate, but sometimes you just can't fix stupid. I have spent some time fishing on rock outcrops near the ocean, but I don't like them because you need 5 eyes to keep lookout. It's like taking a car ride with a drunk - the impossible can happen when you least expect it.

On the flip side, I will take some risks based on my evaluation of current circumstances & conditions. This is a PERSONAL choice of mine and I do this without risking the lives of others, eg; riding my bike at high speed SOLO in clearly deserted areas, surfing in large seas that I know i can negotiate. I don't want anyone endangering themselves to retrieve my carcass because I screwed up.

there is a rock outcrop -almost a rock jetty -that i can see from hph down at the end of kam 3 - see people walking and fishing out there all the time --

Harlynut. it is a matter of personal choice, but it isn't when they have to come look for you and they will. Those are the people you are putting at risk. Anything we do in life does have an effect on someone somewhere.
