I have read lots of reviews on the best ways to get from the airport to the centre of Rome. Quite simply I am a bit of a planner and would like to know what tickets I need to buy for what? and where from? Can I get a travel ticket that is valid for both the Leonardo express and the metro/ bus network? Where are the tickets purchased from? and is the public transport system easy to use?

The express train service from Fiumicino to Rome Termini in the heart of the city takes 32 minutes and trains run every 30 minutes. Tickets cost, or used to, 4.50 euros. These are train tickets and not valid on buses

Bus tickets cost 3.62 euros, or used to, from the automatic machines. I have never used this service, but when I have taken a taxi into Rome the holdups because of congested traffic have been considerable so I suspect the train is somewhat quicker than road transport

ity bus tickets in Rome are valid on all city bus, tram and metro lines operated by ATAC or COTRAL.

Robert, I take it it's been a while since you took the train from FCO to Rome...

The express train now costs 11 Euro. There is no longer any bus service from FCO to central Rome.

Tickets for the express can be bought at the counter or in ticket machines at the FCO train station.

For bus/Metro ticket information, look at www.atac.roma.it.

You can find all the options to transfer from Fiumicino airport (excluding private transfer companies) on the Rome airport website

http://www.adr.it/content.asp?L=3&IdMen=731

The Leonardo Express is 11 euro as Zerlina wrote (the website shows 9 euro on some pages). Tickets can easily be purchased at the train station which is a short walk from the terminals with good signage and escalator & elevator options up to the station (as up one level from the street). Depending on where you final destination in Rome is the Leonardo Express or other options may be the best one for you.

It looks as if you wish to travel to Roma Termini station and in that case the advice given so far is fine. However there is another train from the airport which goes to Roma Ostiense station and is approx 4.5 euro. I have used it without any problem. Beware though at what time your flight gets in - trains do not run in the later hours. Look up the website trenitalia.

Yes to arrive to the other stations from Rome Fiumicino is with the FM1 train to Rome Tiburtina. They are Parco Leonardo, Fiera Di Roma, Ponte Galeria, Muratella, Magliana, Villa Bonelli, Roma Trastevere, Roma Ostiense, Roma Tuscolana and finally to Roma Tiburtina (which is what you would see on the boards) for the FM1 train. Tickets are now 5,50 euro.

The Leonardo Express isn't included in any metro/bus pass like RomaPass; I don't know about the FM1. You don't reserve ahead of time, you buy the ticket at the platform and get on with everybody else.

The Roman public metro, bus, and tram system is easy to navigate.
