Hi Eric. You should like any hotel in the Playa Dorada Complex. It is just outside Puerto Plata. You can bring any guests to your room at any hotels except for staff. The nightlife there is pretty good and you might try some of the discos in town. (Puerto Plata) They are a lot of fun and prople are at them all night long. The beaches are clean and you can book any excursion from there too! DO NOT RENT A CAR OR MOTORCYCLE YOURSELF. I myself have wanted to on many occasions, but it is simply dangerous not only because of the crazy driving, but because you can be an easy target. It is affordable to take taxi's or the gua gua (local bus) and easy. Bring small bills for tipping, bring imodium just in case, learn a few spanish phrases, and have lots of fun! Any thing else you want to know, just ask away!

hi Eric, I don't like to disagree with the other reply but at Playa Dorada and other large resorts I believe you will find that overnight and/or unreistered guests are not permitted. you would do better staying at a small hotel in Sosua.There is much more going on in Sos��a than the city of Puerto Plata, lots of bars and night life. For scuba, here are two I would suggest.

Driving is hazardous, but moto-conchos (motorcycletaxis are usually available and to go from town to town i.e. Sos��a to Cabarete (a wind surfing centre) about 10 kilometres guaguas (mini buses) are the way to go. Youmay find our Yahoo Sos��a group of interest.
