I have never been whitewater rafting and it looks incredibly fun and exciting. I would like to try it. Obviously this means I am looking for the beginner rapids and would like to do it within driving distance from my home.

I live on Long Island. I would not mind driving to the Poconos and lets say a 300 mile radius of NYC. What else? I would like to do it for a long weekend with camping and POSSIBLY some mountain biking.

Any ideas?

My rafting has been done in the West, so I can't speak from experience about the East. You might use the link to get started. Good luck! …about.com/od/newenglandrafting/New_England_…

My sister-in-law went whitewater rafting @ Lehigh River in Poconos last weekend w/ her husband, and their 2 kids, ages 13 & 11. That was their 1st whitewater rafting experience, and they had a blast. They also did the 25-mile bike riding the 2nd day. We plan to go with them in early August. This will be my kids' 1st trip. The website for the company they went with is http://www.whitewaterchallengers.com/

I've read about some good whitewater in Maine. Not sure how close that would be for you, though.

Ive done the Delaware Water Gap area one - it was lots of fun even though the water level was sort of low. Noticed there are a lot of those rafting brochures around my neighborhood suddenly so it must be that time of year.
