We spent a bunch of money on a bigger suite for 5 nights during the worst heat wave NYC has had in a long time in early June. The weather was awful! The Madison suite was cool -- both literally because of the two air conditioning units, and because it was our own little pad in a beautiful neighborhood. We... more

We thank the reviewer for the positive comments in their note, though we'd like to briefly address a couple things they mentioned First, in regard to their buying a fan, we stock several fans throughout the building, including fans in the rooms they stayed in (many people prefer fans to air conditioners). The fans for their unit were most likely...

We stayed in the Madison suite with visiting relatives (four adults total). The suite was lovely, spacious, and , particularly with the full kitchen, a great value. Terrific location on Upper East Side; easily walkable to midtown, Central Park, and Museum Mile, and very close to several subway lines. The staff was responsive and friendly. Their web site accurately reflects... more

We arrived on a Saturday and followed the instructions we had been sent on how to get in to the property "after hours". We had no problem with this, and since we were told that no one would be there, we did not expect a greeting by anyone. However, I did expect (for the price - we had the Lexington... more

The following is a response to the comments from this guest. Our introductory statement on our confirmation states as clearly as we are able to make it that we are not an overly solicitous heavy interacting establishment. We respect our guest’s privacy and generally interact with them at their request. As our literature states, most guests prefer this model from...

After searching for weeks and finding nothing suitable, I stumbled upon the 1871 House web site. I contacted the property directly and talked with Leon, the Daytime Manager. Leon gave me a fabulous, last-minute price, and in the end was able to upgrade me to a suite! The rooms are quaint, clean, very spacious, and comfortably decorated. I brought home... more

Was lucky enough to find 1871 House online after searching for hotels high and low with little luck. Stayed in the garden room on the second floor... with a large private garden/terrace off the bedroom; it doesn't get much better than that. Room is extremely spacious... probably 3 to 4 times the size of a normal NYC hotel room. Bathroom... more

We stayed at the 1871 house and had a very nice room/suite on the top floor. The room was very clean and nicely appointed and was actually the entire floor. There was a kitchen, bathroom, 2 bedrooms and a large living area with a king bed and sofa/dining area and fireplace. I didn't like that the management wanted additional $$... more

We loved our stay at the 1871 House. The structure is a brownstone which is situated in a perfect east side location and has the charm of a New England like B&B with all of the city nuances and conveniences. Our room was decorated country/ federal style with high ceilings, beautiful moldings, soft quilts, and antique furnishings. It was fun... more

A fantastic place to stay and highly recommended. I've travelled to New York many times, but this was the first time for taking my parents, brother and partner in one trip. Hotels were too impersonal and costly: we wanted somewhere central, a bit of "real" New York and somewhere we could call home for the duration of our holiday. This... more

My reason for staying was medical (1871 House is close to Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital), as opposed to a mini-vacation. Since I had to spend lots of time in the room, it meant a lot to have a large bow window that let in lots of light. We had tea on the planted terrace outside our room, an experience... more

My friend and I stayed at the 1871 House the week between Christmas and New Year's in the Madison Suite and had a fabulous time. The suite was fantastic! Leon was fantastic! He helped us poor pathetic women carry our suitcases upstairs and answered all our questions, gave us advice, suggested wonderful restaurants and was basically at our beck and... more
