4 poster bed in room rocked, room was tired looking with bed crammed into 1 end of the room. Bathroom was tired and dated. So called luxury room stuck in the 1970's. Boiler in "Luxury" room sounded like a saniflo system everytime someone turned a tap on in the hotel. Hotel staff were friendly and breakfast was ok. more

I stayed at the Ilfracombe House for seven months whilst working in Southend, and it was a real "home from home" for me. This hotel was homely. Staff friendly. Breakfast could have been better and dining room was a tight squeeze. The rooms are worn but do have character and much better than the stale 'designer' rooms of more up market hotels. A good 3 star hotel. more

I paid £74 for a "luxury" room, which turned out to have a plain metal four poster bed with nothing luxury about it. The bedroom tv was described in the brochure as having fast-text, but it wouldn't work and when I reported it as a fault, the hotel suggested I use the teletext in the main lounge. I spent 2 days in Southend with my grandson to take him to Adventure Island. We booked the Oriental 2 bedroom suite which is next to the hotel and included breakfast in the price. The hotel was close to the beach and elevated and we had a nice walk along the front to get to Adventure Island and the shops... more

An excellent stay. Very friendly and polite service from all the staff we met. We decided to book another night and because our room was already booked out, we were upgraded to a wonderful private 2 bed apartment for the same price. It was great! Brilliant service from start to finish. Great value and location - I was upgraded to a two bed suite, complete with lounge and a TV in each room :-) Would stay again. Breakfast was a bit ordinary and hence I've taken off one star. more
