My husband and I decided to splurge for our first anniversary and booked two nights at the Highlands. I am bothered by the complaints about the weathered exteriors because the hotel WAS built in 1915, and I appreciate the fact that they have maintained the natural charm of the resort. Incredible views, romantic setting, on site fine dining... all at a price. This is an old established venue, and with that you get the mature trees, the rooms set into the hillsides and a vista second to none. You also get weathered buildings and sometimes older furniture, but the experienced traveler should always ask in advance for the refurbished rooms... more

A great location, and great views, however the front desk lady was extremly rude,on check in. The rooms are in serious need of remodeling , as they are quite tatty for what they charge. We just returned from our 20th Anniversary trip and we stayed at the Highlands Inn, Carmel.
