We thoroughly enjoyed our week long stay at the American. It can't be beat for location, right on the Leidseplein. We had a room overlooking the canal and it was perfect for us. Big picture windows that opened for a full view and a great breeze. I am sure the rooms vary in quality and size, so it would be... more

The hotel was walkable to most attractions, clean, fairly spacious and we were lucky to get a room that overlooked the canal. Reception staff were very helpful and cheerful and indeed the breakfast staff were too. We ate the first breakfast at the hotel (quite a lot of choice) but there are many small cafes locally that serve a decent... more

Well, we arrived to the American on a Saturday. After a flight, you want to get to your room & relax, right? Well apparently they had overbooked for our first night & we had to spend the night at a different hotel across the street. There was some back & forth because we really weren't too pleased. Well they definitely... more

Good location, but our so called luxury room was a converted meeting room with a bed that dropped from a cupboard. The bathroom was too small and it was virtually impossible to get into the shower as you had to jump the toilet. The worst thing was housekeeping banging incessantly on our door at 8.30am on Sunday morning wanting to... more

Hotel is well situated. Receptionist and concierge very professional. Room clean and no complaints other than there is insufficient lighting in the entrance to the room, difficult to see into wardrobe or the full length mirror. The room was really quiet. Cocktails at 10 euros each are not cheap, but they were some of the best cocktails we've tasted. Trams... more

On arrival at The American they could not find our reservation. We were joining friends who were already checked in and after being told they had lost our booking and the hotel was full we were not very happy. We were booked out to the Park Hotel for the night and promised an upgrade for the following night in the... more

My husband and myself enjoyed a 3 night stay at the American Hotel to celebrate our 1st Wedding Anniversary. I can't fault the hotel, service and city itself. We had a really fabulous time. Our room was huge, spotlessly clean and although we didn't dive into the mini bar it was still nice to have. We did not hear ANY... more

Yes, I DID return to The American and had a much better time this year. Bar American has had yet another refurbishment (it's about the 10th makeover it's had within ten years!) and the cocktail menu is different, the barman even remembered the cocktail I'd drunk there a few years ago and offered to make it for me, which was... more

I went with my wife for a honeymoon trip round Europe last month and our first stop was in Amsterdam. We stayed from March 08 (sat) to March 11(tue). Booked thru regular hotel website and asked for a room for honeymooners with a king bed and a view to the canal. We e-mailed with our travel schedule and warned about... more

Spent a long weekend here in august with friends and had a fantastic time. the hotel was a good 4* with decent sized rooms. We had breakfast cocktails outside the hotel and evening drinks in the bar prior to going out and everything was fine although drinks were a little pricey. The hotel is more or less at Leidsplein Sq... more
