Lovely house, but we had a very irritating guide and I can't say I learned much. It's a relatively expensive tour -- $12 -- and simply did not compare to other historic home tours in Salem that cost much less (or nothing at all). The money does go to a good cause. But if these tour guides are being paid... more

I visited the House of the Seven Gables last week and what an excellent tour we had. Justin our guide was very informative giving descriptive details of the home and family's history and he offered to answer any questions during and after the tour. He told us he had been there for quite some time and you could easily tell... more

This was our 1st trip to Salem and The House of Seven Gables...we loved it. The history of the house was very interesting and the trip up the secret stairway was an experience! Our guide was VERY informative and friendly as were most of the people in the area. We had wonderful weather and got great pics outside, but we... more

We weren't sure what to expect and weren't fans of Hawthorne. Nevertheless, the tour was interesting and fun. The guide was superb. The secret staircase is great and the vintage attic room was worth the trip. To our great surprise, this was our favorite stop in Salem. I'm now reading (and enjoying!) the book. more

We went to take the House of Seven Gables tour during a very busy Saturday afternoon. I didn't want to wait all day so we came back Monday morning and went right in. My friends and I loved the tour....it was like walking back in time and getting history wrapped around you like a warm blanket. Our group consisted of... more

As I understand it the secret staircase was added when the house was restored to seven gables in the 1930s or so. The staircase is not mentioned in the novel, IIRC. It is just fun to use and cogitate about. Was it to hide runaway slaves? Pirates? It is part of the learning experience. Maybe some modern Hawthorne will write... more

I would have visited this house regardless of the reviews, given its place in literature, but one thing I was not aware of before my visit is the fact that it's the oldest surviving 17th century mansion in North America. Witih such historical, literary and architectural significance, I found the admission price quite reasonable. I am surprised at some of... more

We went on this tour when we were in Salem as part of a side-trip from Boston. I wanted to see Salem but it seems like a lot of the attractions there are not that interesting and this is one we decided to go in and we really enjoyed it. (In the town there are a lot of things about... more

I thoroughly enjoyed this site and I thought that the tour guide was knowledgeable and gave a great tour. I would recommend it, but I have to agree with the other reviews it is a bit pricey for what it is. more
