The beautiful Oakland Cemetery was founded in 1850. It was the only cemetery in Atlanta until 1884. We heard about this cemetery from Tripadvisor and we were very glad that we visited. There is security on the grounds so we felt safe just strolling up and down the rows. There were plenty of large tombs but some of the best views were of the multiple rows of simple stones in the Confederate section. more

This is no creepy graveyard. It's a beautiful Victorian cemetery. Meaning, mausoleums like little houses in yards along little streets. At the time, cemeteries were the first public parks. Conveniently located north of the zoo this cemetary holds graves of many famous Atlanteans including Maynard Jackson, Bobby Jones and Margaret Mitchell.
