The summit of Mauna Kea is one of a kind. My advice for most people is to go through a tour company. The drive along Saddle Road up to the Visitor Center is not impossible, if you are comfortable driving on a crappy (but paved) road. This was one of the best things we did while on the island. Make sure that you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle, otherwise you are unable to get to the summit. There are tour groups that you can sign up for, if that is the way you want to go. We chose to go on our own. The observatory is... more
