As everyone else is saying, the Top of the Rock is the way to go! Great views, not crowded at all, clean, courteous staff, several levels to explore, even a video to see. We walked right in and went to a great view of all of Manhattan, over Central Park and adjacent to Empire State building. No line, nice people and great fun! Not sure what to expect, but after reading tripadvisor we decided to choose top of the rock over empire state building. Rock center was great. very happy we did it and brought the kids.
