My husband and I just returned from a trip to the Big Island where we stayed at the Outrigger Keauhou Resort, a two-minute walk from Kahalu'u Beach. Decided not to go through a tour to visit Kealakekua Bay and searched out other snorkelling sites instead. This is a great family snorkeling beach, but not a good "laying on the sand" beach. It is well protected by a lava "reef" which has attracted all sorts of marine life.
