The Egyptian Museum in Cairo was built in the late 1800's and was opened in 1902. The founder of the museum was the French archaeologist Auguste Mariette, who thought that the antiquities belonged in Egypt and not in various European private collections. When you arrive, make sure that you do not carry any "weapons" with you, as they will be... more

The Cairo museum has approximately 1.2 Million items on exhibit (over 3 acres) and a further 4.2 million in storage. The items are not labeled very well, if at all. It is said that if you spent one minute at each exhibit, it would take you 9 months to see them all! So where do you start? What is the... more

I was sorely disappointed. If this museum has a curator, he or she should be drawn and quartered. The vast majority of the artifacts on display are presented with no information, and the information that is presented appears to have been typed up about 30 years ago on a manual typewriter. The Arab may be clear, but the English descriptions... more

This is a museum that everyone has to visit at least once. 6000 years of history are represented by innumerable objects and unbeliavable treasures. The only drawback is that it is an old-style museum, much like the old European museums: as many exhibits as possible. Fortunately, the Egyptian government is building the new museum, which will be a monumental building... more

I visited Egyptian Antiquities Museum in september 2006 with arranged tourist trip. Before visiting I had great expectations about the museum. Partly it was realized, partly not. Thing that bothers me was: Museum is located in old building, which had bad ventilation system and in some rooms it was extremly hot and stuffy. I really ask myself if that really... more

We arranged tours with Karen from Heart of Egypt(heartofegypt.com) and her driver for our stay to do most of the major tourist sites. The following describes what we saw at the Egyptian Museum. This is where thousands of ancient Egyptian artefacts are stored, including everything from the tomb of King Tutankhamun and a room with several real mummies. We had... more

I was lucky to be in a group with a very experienced Cairo guide who took us around the key areas for about half an hour. You must check out the coffin's downstairs in front of the main entrance and use the mirror to see the inside of the lid of a coffin - you will see a carving of... more

Once through the first security gate, there is a ticket office to the right (LE40 each) B/F gave LE100 to the lady at the counter, as I was excited I dragged b/f away before he could get his change. To the left of the first security gate there is a counter where you have to leave your cameras (gave LE1... more

When we visited the Egyptian Museum, we found it very crowded indeed in the morning, but in the afternoon we went back independently for the hour before closing and found there was hardly anyone in the place. I was completely alone in the Tutankamun room. This is such a good tip I am almost reluctant to pass it on and... more
