I agree - probably the most impressive cathedral I have ever visited. A total contrast between the outside, which is very bland, and the inside which is very ornate. If you love history, art and architecture then you will enjoy a visit to this cathedral. The Baroque style of the interior is unmistakable as you enter through the doorway of its unimpressive facade. You'll have an extended opportunity to view the facade since there are many tourist groups who stop here. I advise coming first thing in the morning... more

This is the most impressive church in Malta and also one of the most impressive that I have ever seen (and I have seen many churches). It was built between 1573 and 1577 according to plans from Girolamo Cassar, who was actually a military architect. Mattia Preti redecorated the interior in the mid 17th century in barock style.
