The shambles is a lovely little street that is not to be missed on a trip to York. For good photos go early in the morning (7) as it gets full of people later in the day. The same can be said for all of York if you want pictures without people in them get up early. more

This street, actually called Shambles isn't named that because its higgledy-piggledy - the name is derived from the deep wooden sills at the front of the shops which were called 'shamels'. The shelves were used to display meat when this used to be a street of butchers - and was known as Flesh shamels. Many of these 'shamels' are still... more

I followed an advice i read in a book that told to take pictures either late in the evening or early in the morning.
