Onguma Safari Tented Camp

Sep 21, 2008

Stayed in Onguma Tented Camp for three nights during our 10 nights in Namibia as part of our honeymoon. We were flying around Namibia and got picked up at the airstrip with another couple that was staying in Plains Camp. This couple was dropped off first and we had a look around. The Plains Camp is amazing and unfortunately when... more

We found Namutoni a little odd. The resort is organised to keep cars out, which makes it a bit of a walk from the rooms to the fort with the restaurant (past the very nice pool). The bush chalets are very impressive, with double showers in a sunken bath, double sinks, and a very nice screened outside shower. The bathroom... more

The "feel" in the Etosha restcamps is very different to the private resorts we stayed in outside - less personal attention, but fairly efficient. We actually preferred being left alone for a while! We stayed in the most basic double rooms, all recently renovated. The rooms are small, but very nice. They have two beds together with an additional child's... more

Wow! Can't believe the reports below. This was absolutely superb in our view. Although I don't know about the $111 price tag shown on this site - we paid US$200 and thought it excellent value. We are 2 adults and a 12 year old. We were given a suite with 2 huge bedrooms and a huge bathroom/separate toilet and a... more

I really enjoyed my stay at Okaukuejo. We stayed in a chalet by the watering hole, and it's great to sit there at night with your camera and see all the animals come to drink. The 2-person chalet is very nice, clean - bed is very comfortable (2 twins), bathroom/shower is modern. Everything is nicely done. The restaurant is decent.... more

Booking our accomodation for our trip to Etosha was very difficult - we were going at peak time and we started to do our research about 8 weeks before we left. We should have started earlier. Luckily I took a chance and booked just about the only accomodation I could get at this late stage within reasonable travelling distance from... more

We split our time between the treetop camp and the tented camp and we loved both! The tented camp is a bigger than the treetop (only 4 rooms). They both are in front of natural waterholes and visited frequently by all types of animals. One night while eating dinner at treetop we saw a leopard having a drink! The rooms... more

Onguma means "the place you do not want to leave" and it certainly lives up to it! Imagine your own boutique tented "camp" in the midst of the Namibian bush with fantastic friendly staff and the most luxurious tents you could imagine.... Onguma is set in it's own private reserve just by the gate into Etosha which makes getting in... more

Stayed here for 3 nights and ,contrary to the 2 previous reviews, found it to be very good. The star attraction has to be the waterhole which has an ever changing variety of animals. This included a rhino and 3 lions whilst we were there. Our guide,Wilhem, was excellent and very knowledgeable. He included a guided walk which made a welcomechange from being confined... more

This place has just been taken over by Kempinski and is undergoing some renovations. The rooms are very good. The food, especially the braai is great. The "reptile park" or whatever they call it is a joke. The service is a joke. more

This was probably the worst place (out of 9) we stayed during our trip. The room was huge but very awkwardly furnished: no desk but three bench-like structures with tops made of widely spaced planks: can't place anything small on them (like a watch or keys) without having it slip through to the floor. The beds were supplied with mosquito... more

We stayed in 2 rest camps in Etosha. Okaukuejo & Halali (See seperate review for Okaukuejo). Our check-in experience at Halali was much better than at Okaukuejo, as the staff were much friendlier. Halali also had a refurbishment, but not to the same extent as the other 2 camps. Thus, it still feels like a laidback, rustic place to stay.... more

We booked into 2 rest camps into Etosha. Okaukuejo & Halali (see seperate review for Halali). The refurbishment of the whole rest camp is stunning and we had a waterhole chalet, which was 20m from the waterhole. The chalets themselves are 5-star and wonderfully appointed. Tasteful furnishing, lovely bedding , comfortable lounge area in front and private outside seating area... more

The new luxurious camp - the latest addition to Visions of Africa - consists of 4 luxurious tents with private facilities (open air view shower with enough pressure to make you want to use it for hours) each on a private wooden platform arranged around a well frequented waterhole steps from your porch. The tents are very well protected from... more

Our expectations were very high after reading all the positive reviews on this site. Our welcome wasn’t as nice as expected. The staff yelled at us to park our Toyota Corolla on a kind of overflow parking which had very large stones not really a place were you normally would drive with a 2WD car. Our room looked very nice... more

We spent 2 nights at Namutoni and were rather disappointed. We could not fault the 2 bedroomed chalet which was modern and spacious but we found the layout of the resort rather inconvenient. You are required to leave the car in a car park and are taken to a drop-off point nearer to the camp, but still some distance to... more

Our family of 5 adults, rented a van in Windhoek and drove to Waterberg, Etosha Park, Damaraland, and Swakopmund. Each destination provided adventure and natural beauty, but, the abundance and variety of wildlife at Etosha GREATLY exceeded our expectations! We spent one night at Halali due to its' excellent reputation for wildlife viewing at the waterhole. Our personal experience was... more

Sadly we only had one night at Onguma Tented Camp. It was extremely comfortable and very well run. The tents are well laid out and carefully designed. The food was the best we found in Namibia. David and Sandra from Zimbabwe who are managing it made us very welcome. I could not recommend it more highly. more

How I agree with Chocolate74! We were there in the 2nd half of April. The tents are new and huge - 30ft x 15 ft, but most of the space is wasted. The lighting is poor (except in the loo!). The hot water tank in Tent 7 obviously was not renewed and our hand washed underwear was stained with rust.... more

This place is in Position A for Etosha National Park, being only a few metres from the gate. It ought to be an ideal place to stay, but somehow just misses the spot and I don't know why - maybe it's a bit too 'corporate' and soulless. The grounds are immaculate with antelope wandering freely about. There is a nice... more
