Traveler Reviews on Lake Baikal

Hotel Europe

Jul 8, 2008

Was booked in here by my husband's colleague as we had an early flight to Moscow. Room was already booked and on arrival found that due to maintenance there was no water for 3 days. Luckily we were only there one night. Unable to flush the toilet.... Room small and basic for around £100 for room only for the 2... more

We were expecting a standard room but ended up in an economy room (we suspect we got bumped to accommodate some 'corporate' clients). Room was in an annexe and was simple but clean and comfortable, though might have been noisy if place had been busy. Reception staff had limited English but were helpful. Breakfast average, dinner good. more

This is a new hotel well situated in a quiet part of central Irkutsk. Our room was not large but was clean and comfortable (with standard iffy Russian plumbing). Staff spoke reasonable English and were helpful. Restaurant (24 hours) served good breakfasts quickly and good dinners. However the fire escape was incomplete (no stairs down from door on our floor).... more

We stayed at the Irkutsk as a break in travelling from Moscow to Beijing on the Trans-Siberian. We were part of a tour group. The room on the right hand side of the 6th floor was in desperate need of refurbishment. The bathroom in particular was very small and in very poor condition. I asked for a change of room... more

We stayed here for two nights as part of our Transiberian Express tour. We too were a little concerned about the distance from the village until we found a lovely local taxi driver who dropped us in and out of the village, several times a day, during our stay. We carried his card and just asked any nearby hotel reception... more

My wife and I stayed in this hotel in July, 2007. It was very clean and the staff was very friendly. The food in the restaurant was great. I plan to stay here again in July, 2008. Herb from USA. more

I have been in Irkutsk several times the past year and have stayed at the Intourist hotel (Irkutsk Hotel) along the river across from the train station. The hotel is good and the people there are very friendly & helpful when needed. There is a bank machine here in the lobby that accepts ATM bank cards from Canada. They have... more

Very small rooms, very small beds, very bad noise insulation from neighboring rooms, bathroom was also very small and in a bad condition. All these on the 4th floor, where the rooms on the right as you exit the elevators are the only ones which seem not to have been renovated for a looong time. There are better rooms in... more

Angara is the central hotel in Irkutsk. The exterior is great. It is shabby inside, but clean, and the key lady on my floor was friendly and helpful once she knew I wasn't a spy. Watch your step into the bathroom, and you can hit your head on a rotating shower ceiling fan if you are over 2 meters tall.... more

We ended up in this Intourist hotel as Intourist were the Russian correspondent of our UK agent through whom we booked our Transsiberian trip (Beijing - Ulan Baator - Irkutsk - Moscow). The hotel is a later 60s - early 70s building - which is fine in itself, the lobby has been redecorated, but why did they forget the rooms... more

Boutique Hotel located on Lake Baikal at the mouth of the Angara River. Restaurant food was excellent and seemed to be very popular with the locals. View from the restaurant as with most parts of the hotel had spectacular views. Internet available via ethernet charged on a usage basis of 5 roubles per megabyte more

Nice new 4 star hotel close to the centre of Ikutsk. Friendly front desk staff, rooms a bit small, reasonable breakfast. WiFi & Ethernet internet connections available. Airline ticket office lady on the 3rd floor particularly helpful in getting seats on airline system that seems to always fully booked more

60 Rooms, Internet, opened June 2006, front rooms have great views over Lake Baikal, most rooms quite small, friendly English speaking front desk staff, satisfactory breakfast in a nicely decorated dining room, internet available via ethernet connection in each room, a WiFi system was under construction. Front door has the name MARK with the R printed backwards but apparently this... more

With views over the lake and situated below the ski runs, the soviet style hotel is some distance from the village. We were allocated a room overlooking the lake & whilst the main road is between the hotel and Lake Baikal, the hotel is high enough not to suffer any noise. Our room & bathroom was of a good size,... more

If you are reading this I assume you are looking for an extreme get-away so bear that in mind with the rankings. As an amateur hiker I found the trail to be very exhausting and challenging. To an experienced hiker this would be a fun 4 day trip. Of course there are options to helicopter in and out, but only... more

The old communist spirit still prevails this big mid-town hotel. There is notable distrust, evident with the "first you pay!" statements most staff are able to utter. Indeed the staff are an unhappy and unfriendly bunch that dishes out bad service. The standard rooms are abysmal and should be completely avoided. The standard-renovated rooms are fine. The buffet breakfast is... more

I rate it "above average" using Russian hotel standards. We were there in the dead of winter and I think we were the only ones there. Our oom was quite nice, with log-cabin/soviet-lamp decor and the restaurant appeared clean. The food was very bland and many items were missing from the menu, but that is absolutely normal for Russia. The... more

Another bog-standard 3-star Russian hotel, which would be 1-star elsewhere. There was nothing especially bad nor especially good about this hotel. We were forced to eat elsewhere, as all the restaurants and counters were screaming really bad music or hideous kareoke, but you can't beat its central location. more

Everything is relative. This is an excellent hotel for Siberia. It was clean and modern. They had an internet access room with printer. Telephones were in the rooms. The restaurant was excellent. My favorite meal was breakfast, included in the room price. The same room was beautiful at night for dinner. The service was excellent. The hotel staff was friendly... more

Visiting Irkutsk during the coldest weather in Siberia for 30 years meant that I was limited in the amount of time I could spend out of doors. 24 hours spent at the Angara waiting for the Baikal express train west were mostly spent in the hotel. The entrance is modern and well appointed with a lobby cafe, shops, a slot... more
