Kilauea Iki Trail

We loved this trail. Start in the parking lot and go towards the lava tubes first. Cross the road and take that little tour, then get back on the trail and go down the steep side and back up the more moderate side. We had some inexperienced hikers with us and they made it okay for the overall 4+ miles.... more

The Volcano House is a very unique experience. This very rustic hotel is not for those who wish to be pampered with the latest amenities, entertainment and fine dining, but for those who are looking to be at the location of interest, that is Kilauea. To be immersed in all of her majesty and surrounded by her beauty. To feel... more

I love visiting the Volcano National Park and there’s no better place to stay (on the entire island) than KMC. This past trip was my third visit and it was once again fantastic. You get amazing access to the park by staying here. I clear most trails looong before the first tourist bus pulls up. Plus it’s a short drive... more

Since this is in a national park, with rates set by the federal park, please don't expect much. We really expected something nice, but it's more like a bunk house than a hotel. Two hard double beds, a shower only, no heat or A/C, no TV or phone and a noisy building is what we found, while expecting a nice... more

After camping in Maui and around Hawaii for many many nights. Staying in the cabins was great. It is hard to believe just how cold it gets in winter especially when raining but between a tent and these cabins i will take the cabins any time. Remember they are not near the centre so you will need a car. Safe... more

We spent one night at the Volcano House in a Crater View room. We had a view of Halemaumau Crater and it was a unique experience. Prior reviews had me worried about what to expect, but we realized that we would not be getting a 5-star hotel. What you are paying for is the close proximity to the crater. Staff... more

As this is a military camp, one can only book it if one is either military, or as a guest of a member of the military. Please look into it, it is so worth it! This camp is a historical monument, which means it has the real character of a family camp from the 1930's, sort of like the camp... more

We didn't do the Iki trail, but we peered down into the crater at those who did, and that alone was something to behold. We also went back to the museum after dark to view the crater's glow. A little spooky. And don't forget to walk through the Thurston Lava Tube, and to get a good view of the Steam... more

Since there's probably more to do in the park than you have time, you're probably better off skipping this one, or just spending five minutes on it. Like a previous reviewer, we were surprised to find another parking lot after only a few minutes. more

We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and decided to do something special by checking out a volcano because we had never seen one. Even after reading the reviews (which were mostly negative) we decided to give them the benefit of the doubt. Well, let me tell you........ The whole experience was worse then the negative reviews. Everything would have been... more

This hotel is right on the property of the National Park. We booked a deluxe room overlooking the volcano. We couldn't see the volcano because of the trees. What a view. When we got to the room you could tell it hadn't been used for a while. There was a musty, closed room smell. The room was way overpriced, $250... more

We went to the National Park as one of the stops on our cruise. It is really impresive. This is no Disneyland, this is the real thing. Being a couple of miles away from an active volcano, looking at the fuming crater and feeling the heat of the steam vents is one awsome feeling. We saw a movie that was... more

KMC is a military (retired or active) only location. It is inside Volcanoes National Park. KMC is a fully contained military camp, complete with tennis courts, bowling alley, small grocery store, bar, cafe, recreation center. Tours can be booked through the reception desk. Cabins vary in size and rate depending upon rank/rate. A two bedroom cabin may have 1.5 baths,... more

Glad we visited the Park, but wouldn't stay here for any reason. We had a tiny twin room in the Ohia building for $130 plus tax. I know the buildings are old, but the upkeep was dismal. There was a miniscule (and noisy) heater perched up on the wall, the shutters looked like they had been painted dozens of times,... more

Namakani Paio Cabins

The Namakani Paio Cabins are a camping-alternative in the heart of Volcano Hawaii. These cabins are right down the road from the Volcanoes National Park (a few miles, you will need a car). LOCATION: The location is great for exploring the Volcano Park. The elevation you are on is nice - the day temperatures are warm and the nights cool... more

The hotel was similar to a hotel you would find along US 25 in South Carolina - except no TV! The restaurant was horribly expensive, the service was poor, and the food was forgettable. Save your money and stay in Hilo or rent a house in nearby Volcano Village. more

We arrived thinking it would be lovely and rustic. It was. On the outside. Inside our cabin was beautiful with a fireplace, hot tub, Tiffany-style lighting, and more. Whatever things you may need : flashlights, umbrella, etc... was provided in the cabin. The restaurant wasn't the greatest and the commissary is basically a convenience store, but who cares? The location... more

My wife and I stayed here with our friends and twin 6 year old girls for 2 nights during our Big Island vacation. Kilauea Military Camp is a totally charming property set in Volcanos National Park. I only feel half-guilty writing this review. Though I love Volcano Park and I think that the park staff are wonderful, I took my family to the Volcano House expecting at least a minimum of a clean and quiet room. The experience was so bad that I have discouraged friends and family from ever going to the Volcano House. It... more
